Intern Blog 2: She thinks we’re “quirky people”

So here I am in London, and I have completed my second full week at WTF Creative. I’ve grown quite fond of these quirky people I’ve been working with. When at first their British personalities surprised me, I now look forward everyday to see what will happen next in this amazing workplace. One of the things I love most about immersing myself in the WTF atmosphere is the focus on television. I happen to be an absolute television junkie, sometimes choosing to catch up on a show rather than go out with friends. I can go out with them tomorrow night, right? When I start a show I become completely involved in the universe that is fictional television and use the show to relate to my everyday life. It’s addicting, and it’s the same with movies. I watch the trailers religiously before they come out, get giddy like a schoolgirl in line waiting to buy my ticket, and stuff my face with greasy popcorn while enjoying both the previews and the movie equally.
Since two of WTF’s clients are HBO and Warner’s I have spent the past two weeks brainstorming copy for shows such as Game of Thrones and movies such as The Hangover. It amazes me that this is part of an actual job. Not only did it pay off for me to spend those three days this summer watching every single episode of Game of Thrones on HBO Go in a row, but it seems to justify almost all of my television binging. And the fact that you hear words such as “Dumbledore” and “Hogwarts” on a daily basis takes the Harry Potter nerd in me to a whole other level.
What I guess I’m saying is yes, some people could argue that watching as much TV as I do is a waste of time. However, I can now make a respectable argument that watching this amount of TV is perfectly healthy considering the career path I want to take. A career that embraces the silliness of fictional television, and appreciates people who spend their lives crafting fantasy worlds for us TV bingers to immerse ourselves in.
And now,in no particular order, I would like to share my top three TV shows of the moment. Also, know that I honestly mean “of the moment.” These decisions could change drastically by tomorrow.
1. Suits- I was told to try out this American show by a Frenchman in London. I thought if people halfway across the world are indulging I might as well try it out. Ten minutes into the first episode I was hooked. Basically this show revolves around a high powered (and quite good looking) lawyer in NYC that hires as his associate a man who doesn’t actually have a law degree but a photographic memory and a quick witted mouth (and who is also extremely good looking.)  The fast banter and smart lawyer talk in this show is enough to keep me around but the fact that it is also frequently quite funny made me addicted and I caught up to the current episode (new ones don’t start again until January) in about a week.
2. The Crazy Ones- I was skeptical to try out this Robin Williams sitcom based in an advertising agency because I am such a fan of Mad Men and thought they were trying to be Mad Men, but humorous. However, this show is brilliant. The comedic chemistry between Robin Williams and his supporting actors (Matthew from New Adventures of Old Christine, and Bob from Mad Men) is spot on and their improv skills are superb. Also, the minute of outtakes at the end of each episode makes me extremely giddy.
3. Veep- I caught up on this show on HBO Go over the summer and I still can’t stop thinking about it. It helps that Julia Louis-Dreyfus is my absolute idol. She joined SNL at age 21! I also happen to be obsessed with The New Adventures of Old Christine, but Veep is an excellent replacement for my JLD needs. This show is hilarious. All of the characters are so intricate and each have their own humorous quirks that will keep you laughing the entire show.
As you can see I tend to veer toward comedies, or dramas with humor dusted within, which is why I am completely in love with the advertising world. No matter how serious a matter everyone in advertising has the ability to laugh at themselves and at/with others. I couldn’t imagining placing myself in any other industry.
